Detailed biography
Gabriel De Roche (Gabe) is an expert in public opinion survey methodology, and holds a PhD in political science from the University of California, San Diego.
He is currently a postdoctoral researcher and Director of Polling and Survey Research at The 2035 Initiative at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he leads complex global, domestic, and local public opinion work on the politics of climate change and the clean energy transition. In particular, he develops and deploys fine-grained geographic sampling techniques to provide survey-derived insights to academic researchers, non-profits, foundations, and policy advocates.
His peer-reviewed academic research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and the British Journal of Political Science (BJPS).
During his PhD studies at UCSD, he employed advanced survey methodologies to study the comparative politics of immigration, with a particular focus on the migration impacts of climate change.
From 2021-2024, his research at UCSD was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program, and from 2022-2024 by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
Prior to pursuing his PhD, he lived in Toronto, Canada, where he worked as a consultant in public affairs and corporate communication and served for more than six years as a senior advisor to Cabinet Ministers in the government of Ontario. In this role, he advised senior leaders in Canada’s largest sub-national government and led files including investment attraction and international trade at the Ministry of Economic Development, behaviour-change marketing at the Ministry of Health, and oversaw numerous public opinion research and consultation projects.
His writing has appeared in national news media in both the United States and Canada (including the Washington Post, the Globe and Mail, and Macleans Magazine) and he appeared as a weekly radio panelist in Toronto.
He is passionate about the arts (especially theatre and music), and has served on the board of directors of a contemporary music company and arts philanthropy organization in Toronto.
Gabe is a graduate of Trinity College in the University of Toronto with a BA (Hons.) in International Relations, and holds an MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego.
He loves to travel (especially for good food and wine), and is the co-host of the Canadian podcast, Culture Lab, a public opinion data-driven show about how the zeitgeist shapes our political culture.
